CHENNAI: In a bid to reduce waste going into landfills, the Greater Chennai Corporation is planning to scale up its bio-CNG plants to produce cooking gas from wet waste.
Currently, the city has 200 metric tonne capacity plants of bio-CNG in Madhavaram and Chetpet. “We are planning to add another 500 MT in the coming months. The plants would come in Sholinganallur and Manali,” said N Mahesan, chief engineer for solid waste management department.
Presently, for every 100 metric tonne (1 lakh kg ) of wet waste the corporation processes, it generates 4,000 kg of methane gas that helps in cooking as well as renewable automotive fuel.
