NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday slashed the price of domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 200, the sharpest-ever reduction that will provide relief to more than 33 crore users battling high inflation ahead of elections in five states, including politically crucial Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
The reduction will also double the relief to Rs 400 for 9.6 crore poor households using free connection given under the ‘Ujjwala’ scheme, one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship social welfare programmes, who get a subsidy of Rs 200 under the Covid relief package announced in May. The reduction will entail a burden of Rs 7,600 crore for the exchequer as additional Ujjwala subsidy.
