Running and maintaining the Delhi-Meerut rapid rail service will be a stepping stone for Deutsche Bahn (DB), the national railway company of Germany, to expand operations in India. Niko Warbanoff, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at DB E.C.O., said he is eyeing more opportunities to operate metro rail services in India.
The Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail service inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, is unique because it is outsourcing operations and maintenance to DB. This is a deviation from the norm in India where mass transport networks such as the Indian Railways and metro services are managed by central or state government-controlled entities.
