KOLKATA: Two persons – a supervisor and a worker – died and another worker fell unconscious after an alleged exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) at a steel plant in Khardah on Wednesday afternoon.
Sources said the accident occurred following a gas leakage from a pipeline during a routine maintenance work inside the plant of Electrosteel Castings Ltd (ECL) off BT Road. A company spokesperson said the accident was extremely unfortunate and they were probing the cause.
According to company sources, three persons – supervisor Swapnadeep Mukherjee (45) and workers Ranjit Singh (38) and Rohit Mahato (32) – fell unconscious while carrying out maintenance work. They were taken to Kamarhati ESI Hospital where Mukherjee and Singh were declared dead. Doctors said they might have been asphyxiated. Mahato was shifted to a private hospital off EM Bypass after his condition deteriorated.
