MUMBAI: A 36-year-old foreign national, staying in Bandra (West), became the latest victim of the light bill scam when a fraudster siphoned off Rs47,000 from her bank account after she was asked to download a remote access app on her mobile to update last month’s bill that the fraudster claimed was unpaid.
The case was registered with the Bandra police on Saturday. Police said the fraudster stole the victim’s banking details after she followed the instruction to download the “Any Desk” app and logged into her net banking to transfer Rs100.
The woman, employed as a supervisor at a private company in Mumbai, has been staying on rent in Bandra and was duped after she received a text message warning that the power supply will be disconnected by 10.31pm for non-payment of last month’s light bill.
