The local Municipal Corporation, the largest civic body in the state, has been unable to clear its power bills on time over the past two years. With the dues touching Rs97.34 crore, Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) has threatened to disconnect power supply.
“We have already served a notice on the MC, asking the civic body to either clear the dues by March 31 or we will disconnect the supply,” a senior official of the Power Department said.
“The Faridabad MC has been the biggest defaulter among the government departments in the state. The matter has been taken up with the MC regularly, but to no avail,” said Pradeep Chauhan, Superintending Engineer, DHBVN, Faridabad circle. The MC failed to avail the benefit of the surcharge waiver scheme launched last year. The reason for the increasing dues is that the MC has been facing financial crunch since the abolition of octroi (local tax on goods) in 2002. The MC is largely dependent on the grants or aid by the state government for development works.
