Amidst complaints of exorbitant airfare and cancellation charges, the government has asked the aviation regulator – Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) – to conduct a study of airfares charged by domestic scheduled airlines in high density routes during the past five years.
DGCA had conducted a similar exercise for the calendar year 2014 and on June 2, 2015 released its report titled as “Analysis of airfares of Scheduled domestic airlines on select sectors during the year 2014.” But, for some strange reason, instead of capping the tariff, DGCA gave a clean chit stating, “The average fare is closer to the minimum fare being offered by the airlines indicating that most of the tickets sold by the airlines are not at exorbitant price.”
