NEW DELHI: A draft law on energy storage systems (ESS) proposes penalising utilities for curtailment of renewable energy, according to power and renewable energy minister R K Singh.
The move is aimed at promoting energy storage with a view to ensuring grid stability as India targets 450 GW (gigawatts) of renewable energy capacity as part of its carbon reduction commitment made at COP26 climate meet.
The policy will be technology agnostic and the developer shall be granted inter-state transmission connectivity under general network access, allowing them to sell or purchase power from any part of the country.
The quantum of ESS will include with round-the-clock renewable energy, which includes battery or pump storage, will be considered as part of storage energy purchase obligation.
