Reforms are required in electricity distribution – both technological & political/administrative. In terms of technology, smart grids & smart meters are to be introduced in a big way. For political reforms, there has to be a regional bulk supplier, pooling all sorts of electricity, irrespective of whether it is nuclear power or coal / gas based thermal power plants, solar, wind, etc., buying at different rates, but the selling price has to be pooled – a common tariff. That is the only way to deal with the situation for all the three stakeholders – generators, discoms & consumers – in the long run. Otherwise, the governments will keep facing some problem or the other, doling out financial packages.
