Chennai: The Delhi Metro Railways Corporation (DMRC) will source lifts and escalators from Chennai-based Johnson Lifts Pvt Ltd on lease under a public private partnership (PPP) model for three priority corridors in Phase IV expansion of Delhi Metro. The contract involves procurement of 179 lifts and 323 escalators that will be commissioned to cover 65km and 45 metro stations.
While the practice by Metro rail networks has been to import escalators for heavy duty applications, for the first time the escalators to be leased by Delhi Metro will be 65% indigenized design and manufacture at Johnson Lifts factory in Chennai and manufactured at its two plants near the city. The lifts will have a carrying capacity of 20 persons, as against 8-13 installed in earlier phases, the company said in a statement.
