MUMBAI: Bombay high court on Monday directed the Centre to consider as a representation a plea that urged to ban a “carcinogenic” primer used to coat LPG cylinders and decide on it in three months.
“Why should people come to court? Why do you not look into this?” a bench of Justices Satyaranjan Dharmadhikari and Riyaz Chagla asked the Centre. It heard a PIL by Paladin Paints & Chemical Pvt Ltd which said studies show that IS 2074: 1992 contains a carcinogenic agent and its use is banned or restricted worldwide. The PIL prayed that urgent steps be taken to ban its use.
The judges said it would be better if it is treated as a representation to the Centre as the court will not be able to go into technical aspects. Disposing of the PIL, they asked the Centre to decide on the representation within 3 months.
