The transport ministry has put off by two weeks the implementation of 100% electronic toll collection across national highways, which was supposed to start on December 1. The government wants to give additional time for vehicle owners to switch to FASTags, senior officials aware of the development told ET. Union highways minister Nitin Gadkari had called for an extension as commuters scrambled to comply with the new mandate.
“The minister has instructed in a recent meeting that the deadline be extended,” a senior government official told ET. In a fresh directive sent to the National Highways Authority of India on Friday, the transport ministry extended the deadline “to facilitate sufficient lead time to citizens to obtain FASTag.”
