Conveyor belts in CCL mines to reduce carbon emission

Coal major Coal India Limited (CIL) is all set to introduce conveyor belts in its open cast coal projects to reduce environmental pollution and avert road accidents during the transport of coal from its washeries to railway sidings.

CIL chairman Pramod Agarwal on Tuesday reviewed the preparations for commissioning conveyor belts across several projects of its Ranchi-based subsidiary, Central Coalfields Limited (CCL). CCL chairman-cum-managing director PM Prasad, director (technical) RB Prasad, and other senior officials were present at the meeting.

“The CIL has introduced a concept, called ‘first-mile connectivity’, under which the traditional way of transporting coal from the silos and washeries to railway sidings will be replaced by large conveyor belts. This is being done to reduce carbon emission and avoid rising hit-and-run cases and accidents,” a CCL official said.

Agarwal discussed about the ‘first-mile’ connectivity projects in its North Urimari, Konar, KDH-Purnadih, Chandragupta, and Sanghamitra open cast coal projects. Agarwal also discussed about the ways and means to implement state-of-the-art coal washeries in its Rajrappa and Dhori coal projects to reduce water consumption and carbon footprint, CCL insiders said.
