R.R. Balasundaram installed a 1.8-kw rooftop solar energy system in his house in Coimbatore four or five years ago. About six months ago, he connected the system to the grid. He paid just Rs. 599 as the electricity consumption charges two months ago and for the recent assessment, he paid Rs. 1,116.
“The solar energy generated is exported to the grid. The total electricity consumption at my house is assessed after the exported units of solar energy are deducted. I need to pay only for the remaining units. I save a lot on the electricity bill now. In the recent billing, the amount went up because of use of the air conditioner,” he says.
Before going in for solar energy, he used to pay Rs. 5,000 or so as the bi-monthly consumption charge.
