One of the most industrialised districts in the State, Coimbatore is home to power intensive sectors such as textiles and foundries. Though their demand for electricity is high, the industries have gone in for captive generation and also invested in energy conservation measures, thus reducing the power bill.
“For any industry the focus will be on investing in machinery and increasing production. However, with completion, another area that the units look at is reducing costs, which includes the payments for electricity. On an average, the power bill contributes to 8 % to 10 % of the production cost. If an industry can bring it down, its profit will increase,” says P. Anbazhagan, Chief Executive Officer of Mas Solar Systems.
The textile mills in the State have nearly 4,000 MW installed wind energy capacity and most of it is for captive use, says K. Selvaraju, secretary general of Southern India Mills’ Association.
