More production generally is seen as a boon, but mining beyond a permissible limit could land you in jail. Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), government owned company, has filed as many as 10 criminal complaints against its own officers including the CMD of the company, for producing more than what was permitted
Because of such a threat, MCL has stopped further mining at Belpahar Open Cast mine from the 3rd shift of January 15, 2015, pending approval for expansion from 6 mtpa to 9 mtpa. Their expansion file is moving from one department to the other since July 2014.
