NEW DELHI: The government will begin auctioning coal blocks for commercial mining from June 18, a move that will finally free the sector from government controls, unlock its potential to substitute imports and fuel growth.
“We are launching first-ever commercial coal auctions in country on 18 th June. Event will be graced by PM @NarendraModiji. It is his vision and guidance to make #AatmanirbharBharat in coal…” coal and mines minister Pralhad Joshi tweeted on Thursday.

Announcing the decision to open up coal mining to private sector without end-use restrictions as part of the Rs 20 lakh-crore economic stimulus on May 16, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said 50 coal mines would be auctioned “immediately”. But reports suggest the auction could begin with roughly 40 blocks.
