Chennai: A third depot to service and maintain driverless trains in metro rail’s phase-2 may come up near Padur, away from the three corridors under construction. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials said they identified a private plot near Padur, around 2km from Siruseri Sipcot where the terminating station of Madhavaram-Siruseri Sipcot corridor 3 will be built.
Earlier, of the changes made to cut project cost from 89,000 crore to 61,843 crore, a depot planned at Siruseri was scrapped. Now, depots at Madhavaram and Poonamallee are under construction as part of the 116.1km phase-2 and are expected to be ready with the lines between 2026 and 2028.
