NEW DELHI: By August, the Public Works Department plans to complete a 14km-long solar cycle path on Outer Ring Road, stretching from Mukarba Chowk to Jagatpur Khadar Village. The project promises to save Delhi government up to Rs 3 lakh in power bill every year. It is being touted as the longest cycling track in the country and aims to encourage the use of non-motorised vehicles.
A PWD official said the construction of the track has already started near Mukarba Chowk as well as at the other end. The project, launched in September last year, was initially supposed to be completed by March. However, it got stuck due to operational difficulties. The track will be 2-metre wide on either side of the road and connected with 1.5m-wide footpaths. While the project offers many advantages, PWD officials admitted that there were several challenges too, the primary one being that the area is prone to thefts. Officials said they would install over 50 CCTV cameras on the stretch to keep anti-social elements in check.
