Chennai: State finance minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan said that the existing meters, digital or otherwise, will be replaced by smart electricity meters with prepaid facilities under the RDSS scheme.
Currently, entire T Nagar and a portion of Kodambakkam have 1.15 lakh smart meters installed in houses and commercial premises under the smart city scheme. The bills are automatically generated at the end of each billing cycle and consumers get an SMS of the due bill.
Tangedco is likely to float tenders to fix smart meters across the state. Since the minister has announced it will be installed for paid consumers, the hut dwellers, who get free power, may be exempted from this.
