NEW DELHI: An abandoned coal mine is the most unlikely spot where one would expect to tee off, indulge in a bit of water sport, do some bird watching or just enjoy the splendour of nature. But a visit to Mudwani dam eco-park and Ananya Vartika eco-restoration park & lake in Madhya Pradesh will change your mind.
Developed by Northern Coalfields Ltd in Singrauli and South Eastern Coalfields Ltd in Dola, respectively, the landscaped getaways are the latest examples of state-run coal miners looking at eco-parks and recreation centres to monetise exhausted mine land — with social and environmental dividends.
Western Coalfields Ltd has built an eco-mine tourism circuit, Saoner eco-park, in collaboration with MTDC near Nagpur.
