China has added 5.2 gigawatt (GW) of installed solar power capacity in the first quarter of 2019, led by new projects in northern and eastern China, the National Energy Administration (NEA) said on Thursday.
The total installed solar power capacity has reached 179 GW at the end of March, the NEA said, up 28 per cent from a year earlier.
The Xinjiang region and Gansu province, where China has built large-scale solar power projects, are still battling the problem of power going to waste because many sites are not connected to the grid and the surplus power cannot be consumed locally, according to the NEA.
