CHENNAI: After years of delay, Tangedco has stepped up work on three of its pending thermal power units with a view to adding 2,120MW to its existing capacity of 4,320MW in the next two years.
Of the two, North Chennai phase 3 thermal unit, with a capacity of 800MW, is expected to be commissioned by this year-end. The project, costing ₹6,376 crore, is under progress for the last few years. Two other units, with a capacity of 660MW each, will be commissioned at Ennore SEZ by next year-end, said a Tangedco official. It is estimated to cost ₹7,688 crore. Both are funded by the Power Finance Corporation.
Since 2014, Tangedco has not commissioned any new thermal project and the discom is far behind its counterparts in Maharashtra and Gujarat, which have 10,842MW and 6,927MW installed thermal power capacity respectively. Discoms with own power generation units are able to source power at lower cost.
