CHENNAI: Passengers may see branded restaurants, food courts, retail shops, showrooms and other utilities at railways stations including suburban railway stations while plans for a multi-modal cargo terminal will get fast-tracked as the ministry has cut license fee and has increased the lease period for space or land to 35 years.
A shorter lease period was one of the major reasons for stations not having good restaurants, shops and other establishments.
MGR Chennai Central and Egmore and major suburban railway stations have space but are bereft of utilities like bigger restaurants, retail shops and others. The huge space at MRTS stations located at the heart of the city could not be made the most of by railways because of the unattractive terms and conditions.
