CHENNAI: A 26km metro rail corridor from Light House to Poonamallee could get ready much before the rest of Phase 2 corridors, as preliminary work is in full swing with CMRL identifying a firm to lay tracks through some of the city’s busiest areas.
The stretch will link some of the city’s core localities such as Mylapore, T Nagar and Vadapalani with popular but poorly-connected western suburbs such as Porur and Poonamallee. Recently, IRCON International, which is under the Indian Railways, was identified as the lowest bidder for a tender to lay tracks along the corridor. The corridor is part of the 118.9km three-corridor Phase 2 metro rail project, which has a 2025 deadline.
CMRL officials had already given priority to get the stretch between Porur and Poonamallee on the Light House-Poonamallee corridor ready first, with work on an elevated line and a viaduct already having taken off.
