Chennai: In an effort to protect the environment and save conventional energy the Southern Railway has turned to solar power. The Southern Railway has set up rooftop solar power panels at Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Central railway station to generate solar power. The railway has been generating 600 kw of solar power from the panels now. According to sources, the railways has been saving 25 per cent of conventional energy per day after the installation of solar power panels and saving Rs 1.5 crore every month.
The railway also installing roof top solar power panels at the suburban station, adjacent to Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Central railway station and Egmore Railway station to general 800 kw and 250kw of power from the stations.
