Central Electricity Authority (CEA) receives very detailed data from all the power plants. A compilation of the same by them fuel source-wise and their weighted average rate of sale of power from generating station to power utilities for the year 2012-13 has been tabulated by them (see table).
This reveals that the cheapest source of power is hydro (Rs 2.3619 per unit) followed by nuclear power (Rs 2.6653 per unit). The most expensive source of power is Thermal Diesel (Rs 11.8949 per unit) followed by Thermal Gas (Rs 4.4441 per unit).
In 2012-13, power could be sourced from private sector at Rs 3.2719 per unit, at Rs 3.3486 per unit from the state government sector, and at Rs 2.9471 per unit from central government sector
