India has ambitious plans to increase the share of its non-fossil power capacity to 50 per cent by 2030. However, power generation from renewables is intermittent, and thermal projects often run for extended hours to stabilise this variability. This is where the storage of renewable energy becomes critical. It allows power operators and consumers to store renewable energy and release it when needed. Most energy storage systems are versatile, modular and can be deployed anywhere in the power grid and at any scale. Ramping up grid storage is critical for India to meet its renewable energy targets and consequently, cut carbon emissions. The upcoming Union Budget can be leveraged to showcase India’s vision to develop a vibrant energy storage ecosystem.
