BENGALURU: In an attempt to resolve the perennial garbage crisis, Koramangala residents have commissioned Bengaluru’s first biomethanation plant which converts wet waste generated in all the blocks into bio-CNG.
The plant, with an intake capacity of 8.5 tonnes a day, will generate about 510 cubic metres of bio-CNG, which is the equivalent of 245kg of LPG. Interestingly, kitchens at some Koramangala restaurants run on bio-CNG supplied through a dedicated pipeline.
Koramangala Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA), one of the first to achieve 100% waste segregation, had hogged the limelight by operating a wet waste composting centre in 5th Block. Now, assisted by the NGO Saahas and funded through CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiatives, the RWA has set up Bengaluru’s first decentralised biomethanation plant.
