BENGALURU: Green energy might be the flavour of the season but Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has swung the other way. Not only has it been lax in spreading awareness on a central government scheme that provides a rebate on rooftop solar installations, but the supply company has also been tardy in processing applications.
The Centre’s Soura Gruha scheme provides a rebate of up to 40% for installations with a capacity of up to 3kW and 20% for capacity that exceeds that. However, since 2019 when the scheme was first announced, Bescom reportedly received 1,200 applications until February 2022.
When TOI checked with the electricity supply company, applications had gone up to 1,486 as of October 2022. Renewable energy enthusiasts say the primary reason for this total lack of enthusiasm are the power purchase agreements (PPAs) Bescom has signed with large-scale solar power generators.
