BENGALURU: While the state government recently announced a plan to convert all 35,000 buses of four state-run bus corporations into electric by 2030, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) on Friday floated a tender to purchase 840 BS-VI diesel buses.
This despite diesel costs soaring and the utility facing severe shortage of drivers. A litre of diesel costs Rs 87.8 per litre in Bengaluru. The decision to purchase 840 BS-VI diesel buses, ahead of the assembly polls, has raised several eyebrows. BMTC managing director G Sathyavathi was unavailable for comments.
Under the ‘Grand Challenge’ plan of Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL), a PSU under the Union power ministry, 1,500 buses were allocated to Bengaluru on a gross cost contract (lease model).
