On March 19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the people to observe March 22 as self-imposed janata (Public) curfew from 7 AM to 9 PM. During the janata curfew, people were requested to avoid public spaces and stay home for 14 hours. There was no specific direction for airlines. GoAir voluntarily suspended operation on March 22, while IndiGo suspended 40 per cent of its flights. The other airlines also curtailed their operations.

A few hours before the above announcement on March 19, the government announced stopping of all incoming international commercial passenger flights from March 22 midnight, for a week. Later, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) stated that the deadline for flight landing in India was till 8 PM of March 22, after which flights will not be allowed to land.
