Automobile engineering is emerging out of the shadows of mechanical engineering with the advent of electric mobility, autonomous vehicles and alternative fuels. It is now an amalgamation of mechanical engineering, electronics engineering, instrumentation, control engineering and computer engineering.
K C Vora, emeritus professor at CoEP Tech University, and the chair of ASDC Expert Group on electric vehicles (EVs), says that there are three areas where Indian automobile engineering education does well – specialisations, industry collaborations, and cost-effective education.
Indian institutions, he says, offer vehicle design, materials and manufacturing, engine design, automotive emission, noise-vibration-harshness, automotive electronics, electric and hybrid vehicles, and more. The education emphasises a solid foundation in mathematics, physics, and engineering principles.
