Setting new records, Andhra Pradesh Genco has increased the generation from all its power stations by 12 percent during May 2023. The additional generation from the government owned power stations has greatly eased the burden on the discoms.
The Genco has increased its production by 12 percent which accounted for nearly 45 percent of the total energy demand of the state. Genco could only supplement about 33 percent of the total demand during the last May.
“We have concentrated on increasing the production from the Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) power generation stations while planning the power managed during the summer peak season. This is chiefly aimed at reducing the dependence on the private players and purchases from exchanges. Our efforts have yielded results,” said special chief secretary (energy) K Vijayanand.
Energy demand in the May 2022 was registered as 5947.39 million units from which AP Genco could supply around 1989.37 million units. The demand has surpassed all the previous records during the just concluded May when it reported nearly 6430.72 million units. “We have anticipated the growing demand through scientific analysis and stepped up efforts to increase the generation from our own power stations,” said AP Genco managing director KVN Chakradhar Babu.
“Genco stations produced around 2917.99 million units of power in May which is record in the history. This is nearly 45 percent of the total demand,” said Chakradhar.
In fact, discoms would have faced huge burden had they purchased nearly 70 percent power from the private developers and exchanges particularly when the demand shoots up to highest during the May. The genco’s advance planning to increase the production had not only saved huge money to the discoms but also brought stability to the grid. In fact, lessening the burden on the discoms is lessening the burden on the consumers because the discoms would ultimately transfer the purchase and transmission costs to the consumers. “Genco’s share would have been more than 50 percent had the consumption remained stabled at last year’s consumption. We could take nearly 45 percent load despite massive increase in the demand,” said Chakradhar Babu.
