The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a fine of Rs 30 lakh on Air India in connection with the recent death of an 80-year-old passenger who opted to walk from the aircraft to the terminal building due to a shortage of wheelchairs. The incident occurred on February 12 when the elderly passenger, a US citizen of Indian origin, flew from New York to Mumbai with his wife on an Air India flight.
“Further, Air India did not inform about any action taken by the airline against the erring employee(s) and the airline also failed to submit any corrective actions taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future,” the official said.
