CHENNAI: The city airport may be classified as a sensitive facility in terms of security but the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is yet to strengthen perimeter lighting and sensors to detect intruders. It has been a year since the plan was proposed, but the systems are yet to be installed.
A sensor-driven electronic perimeter intruder detection (PID) system along the walls was also on the cards since 2017 and was supposed to be installed by the end of 2018.
AAI has floated tenders a few times for installing better lights, though it was not taken forward. Now, a fresh tender has been called for by including recent modifications suggested by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). It was meant to be awarded by July 25, but it is yet to be done. The same work was supposed to begin in July last year.
