Power prices shoot on IEX as links snap

A critical transmission link between North India and rest of the country has resulted in power prices shooting to Rs 6 per unit in South India and average price touching around Rs 5 per unit. Average prices a week back was around Rs 3.5 per unit.

The link snapped three days ago and power supplies to South India was severely affected resulting in prices inching up from about Rs 4 per unit to Rs 6 per unit.

“They have been waiting for some critical spares to be supplied which has resulted in the delay. It is likely to be restored soon following which we presume prices will cool down again,” said Rajesh K Mediratta, director – business development at the Indian Energy Exchange.

“Not much power is flowing from north to south. Whatever power is being traded in South India is the result of generations in the region although volumes are very low,” he said.
