Three people who were sleeping on the railway tracks after a temple festival died as the Tambaram-Sengottai Express ran them over near Uppur village in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvarur district on Monday, the police said.
The deceased were identified as M Arunkumar (17) of Uppur, K Bharathkumar (17) of Gopalasamudram, and M Murugapandian (23) of Melamaruthur, Nagapattinam district, they said.
According to the officials, several people from neighbouring towns were flocking to the popular Uppur Mariyamman temple in the past few days to attend the Chitthirai festival.
