CHENNAI: An average 97,466 people used the metro trains in Chennai for their commute in November which took the monthly total of 29.2 lakh passengers. On November 25 alone, a maximum of 1.31 lakh passengers travelled in metro trains.
In a release, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd said a total of 1.02crores people have travelled in metro trains between June 21 and October 31 since services resumed in June after the lockdown.
CMRL has been struggling to reach its pre-Covid numbers when its daily average ridership was 1.16 lakh. It was still only less than its originally estimated ridership of 7.76 lakh.
In November, only 45,609 people used the QR code ticketing system, a facility launched for contactless travel, while 16.16 lakh people used smartcards. The rest travelled by purchasing tokens at the stations.
