NEW DELHI: To strengthen the fleet of public buses, the Delhi government has sent a proposal to Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) to procure 2,400 electric buses under the National Electric Bus Programme (NEBP).
These buses, said officials, will be operated under the gross cost model where Delhi Transport Corporation will provide parking space and charging facilities while the operator will run and maintain the fleet. DTC will pay the operator as per the daily running of the buses. DTC will have at least 4,200 electric buses in its fleet by 2025, they added.
Officials said these buses would be of three different sizes of 7, 9 and 12 metres and many of these would be operated in densely populated areas where the roads are narrow. The government had earlier planned to procure 1,600 buses but later decided to cancel the plan of buying 785 CNG-run buses and instead increase the number of electric vehicles.
