33 flyovers opened at night; no more music at signals

Chennai: Police commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore on Wednesday ordered the traffic police to stop playing music at traffic junctions as this was felt to be a distraction for road users and motorists.

The concept of ‘music signals’ was inaugurated at 105 signals in the city in April by then police commissioner Shankar Jiwal. Along with numerous songs, awareness messages were being played at signals.

A police officer said, “We received orders to temporarily stop playing music at traffic signals. As of now, we have stopped the music and are awaiting further instructions.” However, another police officer said that they would reduce the volume of these signals and play in a phased manner.
