Railways to run non-AC trains to cater to low income passengers, migrant workers

EW DELHI: The railways will soon run regular non-AC long distance trains catering to meet the demand of lower income passengers, particularly migrant workers from regions such as eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Bengal and Jharkhand to cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Surat, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai and parts of Punjab.

Sources said the train services on these routes will start before the next Lok Sabha election in a move that is expected to take forward the government’s pro-poor approach in an election year. Officials said the routes have been identified after studying the pattern of waitlisted tickets and assessment of origin-destination of high numbers of passengers.
