Power generation at NTPC, Nalco hit
Production of coal at the mines of the Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) in Angul district has been severely affected after three major workers’ unions launched a five-day strike since Monday opposing the Central Government’s decision to allow 100-per cent foreign direct investment in the coal sector.
Out of total 19 coal mines, only nine were operational in the State. Due to non-availability of coal, power generation at the Nalco captive power plants and the NTPC units have been seriously affected.
The Nalco CPP has only 48,000 MT coal stock against requirement of 6. 40 lakh MT. The company has shut down its five units out of total 10 units. To keep alive to its pot line, the Nalco imported 330 MT power from Grid at higher prices. Thus, the company incurred heavy loss.
