PIL in SC seeks to set up a mechanism at tabletop airports to avoid future mishaps

Two Indian airports have witnessed mishaps resulting in loss of lives due to the lack of Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS), a mechanism that can detect and prevent such accidents. Authorities need to install such systems on a priority in all airports, implored a petition filed before the Supreme Court.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court by Rajen Mehta, an 85-year-old mechanical engineer, seeking installation of EMAS at vulnerable airports across India, including those at Mangalore and Kozhikode, where accidents occurred in 2010 and 2020 respectively.

The plea is also seeking an enquiry and appropriate action against the officials of the responsible for omitting to take action, despite specific knowledge. The PIL names Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation as the respondent in the case.
