Kolkata: Cops likely to re-introduce drop-gates for pedestrians
KOLKATA: Manual drop-gates are likely to be re-introduced in 77 pedestrian cross-over points to prevent jaywalking. These are now in use at Chingrighata Crossing, Ultadanga HUDCO Crossing and Burrabazar. Last year, 77 pedestrians had died in Kolkata streets. The death of a young Bangladeshi national recently was widely reported.
Police said 38% of all fatal road accident victims in the past two years were killed while trying to cross the road or while walking dangerously.
However, in a departure from the past, this time it has been decided that there would not be any automatic drop-gates. All of them will be operated manually with cops posted at both end of the gates.
