IGI bag scare: False or not, each bomb call keeps agencies on toes

NEW DELHI: The police control room receives at least 10 calls related to explosives at Delhi airport every month. Each requires the cops to follow a time consuming probe as per a standard operating procedure, and which engages the resources of different police wings, the intelligence agencies and security agencies.
Depending on the contents of a call, different units are pressed into action to determine the threat. As a first step, police categorise such calls into those made by callers who cannot be located after making the call and those who are available for interrogation thereafter. But in either case, the standard operating procedure has to be implemented as soon as a call is received.
An officer explained that assessing the information given by the caller is an important initial protocol followed by the cops. “It is of fundamental importance to carefully study the caller so that a genuine caller, even if the call turns out to be unfounded, isn’t harassed.
