Greens oppose burial ground plan along Basanti Highway

Kolkata: Notice boards — that have been put up on a narrow embankment between dry water flow and storm water canals along the Basanti Highway in East Kolkata Wetlands declaring the site as a burial ground — have raised the hackles of environmentalists and action groups working in the Ramsar site and fishermen residing there.

Members of the Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat Trust that proposes to use the burial ground said the plot had been given to it by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and that it had no problem with the allocation of an alternative site. The sliver of land between Basanti Highway and Topsia Road lies within 500m of the Ambedkar Bridge near Science City.
