Beware of fake messages, links to clear power dues

Bengaluru: Scamsters seem to be taking advantage of the open-registration process for the Gruha Jyothi scheme that promises up to 200 units of free power every month.

Close on the heels of the registration process picking up pace (it crossed 1 crore on Wednesday), cyber fraudsters are circulating messages on WhatsApp with fake links for clearing dues to avail of the scheme benefits.

One such message, accessed by TOI, states that if dues are not cleared, the consumer’s power supply will be cut off with immediate effect. Trying to gain confidence of citizens, scamsters have even attached the number of an ‘assistant engineer Venkatesh, claiming to be with Bescom.
