Baghjan Oilwell Inferno: North East Institute of Science and Technology to study if there is any induced seismicity
GUWAHATI: While Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has ordered an inquiry into the incident of blow out and inferno in the oil well in Baghjan, Oil India LimitedNSE -2.98 % (OIL) has contacted North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat to carry out a study to see if there is any induced seismicity due to the blowout.
The gas producing oil well blew out on May 27. On June 9 it exploded into a massive inferno.
In an order the ministry stated, “Natural Gas mixed with condensate started flowing uncontrollably from one of the wells of the OIL. Three member high level committee comprising of SCL Das, Director General, Directorate General of Hydrocarbons, B C Bora former Chairman ONGC, T.K Sengupta former director ONGC is constituted to inquire the incident.”
