In various studies conducted by Central Electricity Authority (CEA), it has identified total number of 200 potential sites for setting up thermal power stations with likely gross capacity of 428,905 MW. The studies were carried out for identification of large pit-head and coastal sites based on satellite mapping using remote sensing technology.

After the enactment of the Electricity Act 2003, the generation of electricity was de-licensed. Therefore, techno-economic clearance by CEA is not required for setting up of thermal power projects in India.
